About TipSplit
TipSplit is a free tip calculator and bill splitter built for the moment the check arrives. It handles the standard even split, a percentage split, and โ the mode most calculators leave out โ a full item-by-item split where each dish is assigned to the people who ordered it.
Conventions behind the defaults (checked 30 Oct 2026)
- Tip on the pre-tax amount (default, toggleable). The traditional US convention is to tip on the subtotal before sales tax. We default to it and clearly offer the post-tax option โ neither is presented as a rule, and the explainer on the home page shows the dollar difference.
- Preset tip levels 15% / 18% / 20% / 25%. These are the widely used US restaurant tipping bands, from baseline to excellent service. They are social conventions, not legal requirements, and a custom percentage can always be entered.
- Default tax of 8.25% (editable). A common US combined sales-tax level used purely as a starting example. US sales tax varies by state, county and city โ always replace it with the rate or dollar amount printed on your receipt. No figure on this site is presented as the tax rate for your location.
- Proportional tax and tip allocation. In itemized mode, tax and tip are shared in proportion to each person's items subtotal โ the standard fair-split method, because tax is charged in proportion to what was ordered. Each person's shares sum back to the exact bill total (subject to cent rounding, which is disclosed on the tool).
All calculations run in your browser. Nothing you type โ bills, names or items โ is sent anywhere.
